Running an agency taught me that quality comes from ownership.

On 3 November 2023 I started a small web agency, WLBS. Running it taught me two things: quality comes from someone owning the work, and I always want to be the one coding and building.

So I stay in the code on every project and own every build, from the Figma file to launch. I don’t keep a team. I work with a network of developers I trust and know several agencies, so each project gets the right people. I review and QA every screen before you see it.

I work with design studios every day. The design comes from you; my job is to build it as well as it was designed. You only ever deal with me, and everyone who worked on it is named.

How it went.

    The agency starts

    A small web studio building websites, apps and products.

    A proper brand

    A brand book, and work like moving Chupps from Shopify to WooCommerce.

    The lesson

    Quality comes from ownership. And I’m happiest in the code.

    A network, not a team

    No team. A network of developers I trust, and a few agencies I know. I own every build.
